Fethiye Holidays – A traditional Turkish fishing town

A pretty market town looking out over a wide, turquoise bay, Fethiye has a deserved reputation as being one of the most attractive resorts on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. The town is especially popular with Brits on summer holidays, with around 600,000 British tourists visiting here every year. Fethiye is built into the hillside of Mount Mendos, part of the Tourus Mountain chain which surrounds the bay. The bay itself is comprised of an outer and inner area; the inner bay forming a perfect natural harbour, protected from rough tempestuous waves by an island, Şövalye Adası. The outer bay is dotted with 11 other islands. Those after beach holidays will love the stunning lagoon at Oludeniz, just 10 miles away or the nearer long, sandy Çalis Beach, which stretches over 2.5 miles.

Beaches

The nearest beach to Fethiye is Calis which is only 4 km away.   If you wander along this beach there is a well-known spot for watching stunning sunsets. Slightly further is the famous Blue Lagoon at Olu Deniz, one of the most photographed beaches in the world, just 12 km away. The glistening sands and sparkling seas found along the Turquoise Coast around Fethiye offer relaxing sunbathing and safe swimming, with a spectacular mountain backdrop. To beat the crowds, head to the many secluded coves around the bay.  

Harbour

This is a lively marina and the waterfront is the main aspect of Fethiye. The port offers the ideal spot for a relaxing drink, whilst enjoying the spectacular marina views and activities. Most of the towns' restaurants and cafes can be found around and behind the marina. You will be able to spot traditional wooden gulets, fishing boats and motor cruisers in the harbour.  You can also take day trips out from the harbour to various beaches.

Shopping

There is a market on Tuesdays, which is a great way to get a feeling for the town. Both locals and tourists alike come to buy everything from fresh produce, meat, fish, spices, and traditional handicrafts such as lace and leather. The Old Town, with its cobbled streets, is a great place to find a Turkish rug or kilim.   You will be sure to find the perfect holiday gift from this bustling market.

Water Sports

The beaches around Fethiye offer a wide variety of water sports ranging from pedalos, banana boat and jet ski rides, to water skiing, wind surfing, kayaking, sea biking and parascending. An ideal base for sailing, yachts can be chartered from the port at Fethiye.  Diving is also popular in the Gulf of Fethiye, with the clear blue waters being home to a host of reefs, sunken ruins, wrecks as well as colourful marine life.

Walking

The pine covered hills are ideal for scenic walking and hiking, with mountain biking and horse riding also available.  If you are on a walking holiday, Olu Deniz will be a superb place to explore.  It is also one of the best places in Turkey for paragliding, with many companies offering trips up to the top of Babadag Mountain and thrilling tandem rides down to the beach at Olu Deniz.
